Question from a reader: What points do you needle for mallet finger of middle finger? Does acupuncture help mallet finger?
Answer: An acupuncturist does a complete evaluation of the patient including pulse and tongue diagnosis, health history and examining signs and symptoms. Even for something as simple as a tightened tendon, we would still do this evaluation. Rather than a simple musculo-skeletal symptom, this could be related to an internal medicine condition, such as imbalance of the Liver, which we would want to treat with diet and herbs in addition to acupuncture. When using acupuncture, points are chosen based on the individual, not the symptom. I might have 3 different patients with knee pain and use entirely different points on each one.
If you’re looking for a technique to do at home, I would recommend the Emotional Freedom Technique, which is a self-acupressure technique that works on a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms. You can find lots of information about EFT online.
