Question from a reader: Does acupuncture help environemtnal and food allergies? My son is 5 years old. We discovered food allergies (gluten, nuts, sesame) by blood test before he turned 1. At age 4 he started to have environmental allergies. I am not saying seasonal because it’s every day for 12 month. In the morning looks like he has runny nose and then stuffy for the rest of the day.
We were able food allergy under control using diet, but last few month it got worst. Will acupuncture help in his case? What to expect and how to find the right practitioner in this case?
Answer: Yes, acupuncture can be helpful for environmental and food allergies. Your acupuncturist may also recommend a different diet or other lifestyle factors for your son. One of the benefits of seeing an acupuncturist is that we provide nutritional and health coaching services just as a matter of course. Children generally respond very quickly to treatment.
I would seek an acupuncturist who specializes in pediatrics, if possible. Go to a licensed acupuncturist, not a PT, chiropractor or MD that offers acupuncture. Generally these practitioners have only taken very abbreviated training courses and are not able to offer the full range of treatment that a fully qualified acupuncturist offers.
